My Advice to a Singer-Songwriter
A remarkable person I know and admire, halfway around the world, has taken up the art of songwriting. He’s good, too. I have, of course, encouraged him when I can. Sometimes you just need a bridge that goes Em - D, and sometimes — with very little effort — it can go Dsus4 - D - Aadd9/6 - Dadd9 sus4 - Em7 which sounds complicated but isn’t really. Anyway, I think I am...

A New Year
I seem to be something of an anomoly on Tumblr — I have socks older than most people here. But, what is readily apparent is that age is no requirement for wisdom, caring, a sense of beauty, or sense of humor. I find this to be affirming, if you will allow me to get cliche-ish.
This is the same reason why I love being in the university — my immaturity is a strength.

Two sides of Grace Kelly →
“Mathematically, Kelly presents an unusual case. She made only eleven feature films, in a career that lasted just five years, from 1951 to 1956. Of those eleven, six are treasured—five and a half, maybe, depending on how you feel about “Mogambo,” with its amusing study of the way baby elephants behave in proximity to mud. Of the remaining movies, “Green Fire” is a certified stinker, while...

Pâté de Campagne
I have the New Year Pâté de Campagne molded in the hinged terrine pan (which I always forget how to operate) and ready to go into the oven. Pork, bacon, cream, cognac, corriander, thyme, peppercorns … well, the list goes on.
Over the years, they have become more rustic and less fussy and sophisticated. Sort of what I aim for in the new year.
BYOB — bring your own baguette.

Holiday Behavior
Does drinking wine and playing ukulele in my pajamas (I am in the pajamas, not the ukulele) at 2:00 on a Wednesday afternoon qualify as acceptable holiday behavior, or another symptom of my ever-increasing decline as a valuable member of society?

LE JOUR SE LEVE - ESSENTIAL ART HOUSE →
“A man is shot behind a closed door. He stumbles from the apartment and tumbles down the stairs, passing the only witness, a blind man. Police are summoned. The believed shooter has locked himself in his room at the top of the tenement. By all accounts, he’s a good man. No one knows who the dead man is, much less why their neighbor shot him. The only one with all the answers is behind...

Louisa May All-Clad
After spending 12 hours tending to a brisket in the smoker yesterday, and then watching Julie and Julia last night, I had recurring dreams about Louisa May All-Clad and her Little Range on the Prairie Home Companion.
I need to get out more.

Paper plane enthusiast sets flight record →
With a bend of the knees and an arch of the back, a Japanese engineer today set a world flight record for a paper plane, keeping his hand-folded construction in the air for 26.1 seconds.
* * *
The record was all the more satisfying for having been achieved with a plane that stayed true to the traditions of origami, the traditional Japanese art of paper folding. He folded his 10cm aircraft by...
